Generations of Framing: Bev

When Artists Frame Service first opened in 1978 in what was then an abandoned factory district on Clybourn Avenue, we had no idea that over 45 years later we’d be privileged enough to not only be framing across three Chicagoland locations, but also to have played a part in the special moments of many of our customers’ lives. From graduations and weddings to treasured pieces and grandchildren’s artwork, there is nothing quite like framing what you love, and loving what you frame.

In honor of 45 years in the books (and many more ahead!), we’ve asked a few of our long-time customers to share their experiences of celebrating life through framing.

First up? Lincoln Park regular, Bev Adilman.

How long have you been framing with Artists Frame Service?

A long time! At least 35 fun years for sure.

What are some of the pieces you've framed over the years?

I have framed everything from artwork, family snapshots and diplomas to also some very unusual pieces.

Some favorites are paper bags from businesses that have now closed and stuffed green satin gloves with long red nails on the fingertips that my daughter wore as the Wicked Witch of the West in her high school production of The Wizard of Oz.

Another favorite is a double frame with matting that Carla Dvorak designed to tell the story of a trip I took to La Scala in Milan with my husband. The piece includes our photo, intricate matting and part of the playbill from the opera. And of course, a cherished note from my mother at the end of her life, which was written on the back of an envelope.

Where are some of the pieces displayed in your home?

We truly have Artists Frame Service works all over the house! The office, our bedrooms, the stairways, the kitchen and even a piece in the bathroom!

What do you enjoy most about working with the team at Artists Frame Service?

I frame with Carla who is very knowledgeable in her craft and has always easily understood the feeling or design I'm trying to achieve with the pieces. Knowing her skill, I'm always excited to pick up the finished pieces and get them on my wall right away!

Do you have any advice for anyone just starting to build an art and framing collection?

In my experience with Artists Frame Service, the simplest photographs can become masterpieces with the right framing, so don't underestimate the value of a creative framer.

Buy what you love and invest in framing that enhances your memories and draws you back into those experiences. On different walls in my home, I've often started out with a framed piece or two in the center and then built out from there, letting the new pieces continue the artistic journey.

In this way, the walls grow with my life.
