Tips For Diploma Framing

Diploma Framing

All your academic blood, sweat and tears have paid off and you just received your actual diploma. Now what? You could leave it inside the puffy leather folder, or buried in the basement corner, but why not show it to the world? Framing your diploma not only proudly displays your achievement, it also protects and preserves it from the elements.

And because we know you like to learn things, below are just a few key considerations when doing diploma framing:

1. All framing materials should be archival.

Like you, diplomas are one-of-a-kind. You want to create an environment for your document that will preserve it so only museum-grade, acid-free materials should be used.

2. Glass should be UV protective.

UV glass blocks 97% of harmful rays and protects your diploma from fading over time. If you know where your piece will go (especially if it's in an area with a lot of light), consider anti-reflective or non-glare glass. The best of both worlds and the Cadillac of glass is museum glass, which is both UV-protected and anti-reflective.

3. Diplomas look best matted.

Matting can be subtle and match the diploma or colorful to reflect your style or school colors. Mats wrapped in fabric give the piece a little extra sophistication. There are countless ways to mix and match mat elements to achieve the perfect look, so make sure you’re working with someone who can guide you through the options.

4. Mounting will keep your diploma flat, but it's not always a good idea.

Mounting is the process (usually using heat activated adhesives) of permanently attaching your diploma to a board. The advantage is that the paper will always be flat, but it’s not always a good idea. Diplomas with gold seals or those printed on real vellum or sheepskin should actually never be mounted.

5. Choose a frame that reflects your own personal style.

One of the truly wonderful things about custom framing is that you can create a look unique to you. Some people choose wood tones that match the office. Some people choose color. Some people even choose glitter. There are thousands of frames to choose from, and with the help of a framing consultant, you can find one that compliments both your document and your style. And if your education is continuing on, you can even buy extra moulding of your selected style to have for future diplomas.

6. You could include other elements in the frame.

In addition to framing your diploma, it is possible to combine other items with significance like the tassel from your graduation cap or a photo.
