Bringing You Frames from Europe: Nellie's Annual Buying Trip

There is a list I’ve been keeping for a while. It’s a list of all the people who have offered to carry my luggage in order to join in on the annual buying trip abroad. It’s a very long list. It is a great opportunity and I feel honored to visit the best European picture frame moulding manufacturers and select amazing items to bring back for the store. I would love to take everyone on the list with me, but alas, the travel budget does not allow.

This year's trip began in Venice. I find the best way to wrestle jet-lag and acclimate oneself is by way of a nice plate of risotto. Properly stuffed silly, we began the factory tours.

We saw great new on-trend designs. We saw designs from antiquity. We saw whole tree logs being turned into stunning picture frames. We saw machines spitting out frames for mass market. We saw the delicate creations of gold-leafing master craftsmen as they gave each stick of frame moulding their undivided attention.

Whole tree logs waiting to be turned into incredible picture frames.

The logs are cut into short square pieces with "teeth" on each end. Instead of cutting each log into a single piece of moulding that might be warped, the smaller pieces ensure everything will be straight and level.

The short pieces have glue applied to the ends and are shot into each other at high speeds to form long sticks like you see above. For thicker moulding, several of these sicks will be glued together.

These mouldings have been carved and are ready to be hand finished in a variety of colors and materials. You can see the variation in the wood and how they've been fused together. It's a truly amazing process!

Trust me when I say we selected the best and the results of our shopping adventures will be in the store later this fall. Look forward to amazing hand-finishes like the surface of the moon, sleek Danish modern whites with wood tones and unique textured profiles finished by hand to look like rusted metal.

Who can resist gold leaf?! This beautiful centuries-old process is meticulously done by hand on every single strip of this line of moulding.

This is as close to "mass production" as these facilities get! The artisans creating the hand-finishes for the mouldings we buy for Artists Frame Service are undoubtably the best.

A different method of gilding! Small pieces of silver leaf are "fluffed" onto a length of moulding that has been brushed with natural glue so the bits will stick.
